ALERT – Scam Warning (Especially for “Wanted” Listings)

Be aware that non–amateur radio scammers occasionally target online ham radio marketplaces, including hamshack.ca. These individuals often focus on “Wanted” listings, where they may contact users offering to sell equipment they do not legitimately own using photos of the wanted equipment obtained on-line.

Typically, the scam involves initiating contact about a potential sale, appearing cooperative, and communicating by phone or text to gain trust. The goal is to move the transaction forward quickly without proper verification.

Please note, hamshack.ca is a listing platform only. All communication and transactions take place directly between buyers and sellers, so users are encouraged to remain vigilant and perform their own checks.

Tips to help prevent being scammed:

  • Ask for current photos of the actual equipment, including a handwritten note with the date and callsign

  • Speak directly by voice before sending any payment

  • Ask reasonable questions about the item’s history and condition

  • Request references if unsure

  • Be cautious — scams can involve prices that are either unusually low or close to market value

If something doesn’t feel right, do not proceed.

Stay alert and protect yourself.
