This week, two attempts by unscrupulous individuals to scam Hamshack users were thwarted. Details as follows:
Case 1: In the first incident, an unauthorized posting appeared on the site, advertising an item at an unusually low price. The account owner noticed the posting but confirmed they hadn't made it!!
Lesson Learned: Ensure your account passwords are robust and known only to you. While Hamshack.ca doesn't involve financial transactions, it's still crucial to use a hard-to-guess password.
Case 2: As many of you are aware, the registration process for Hamshack was tightened-up a couple of years ago to combat scams on ham radio and other online buy-and-sell platforms in Canada. Now, Canadian hams can apply for an account by completing an on-line form after which the applicants info is verified against the Spectrum Management and QRZ.com callsign databases.
An account application from Callsign: Ve1BMJ and "Name: Thomas Gaum" raised concerns when disturbing information was discovered on another ham radio buy-and-sell site (https://chat.qth.com/viewtopic.php?t=14373).
Lesson Learned: While account requests are vetted, this process doesn't eliminate the possibility of someone using another ham's callsign. Exercise caution when making purchases on Hamshack.ca and other online forums, and familiarize yourself with the Hamshack.ca Terms of Use to understand the platform's guidelines and Limitation of Liability when it comes to user accounts.
