Free Basic Amateur Radio Course Instructions

Step-by-Step Guide to Earning Your Basic Amateur Radio Licence

Step 1: Study the Free HamShack.ca Basic Course

Access the Basic course here:

The course provides everything you need to prepare for the exam, including:

  • Regulations – Learn frequency rules, licensing, and emergency protocols.
  • Operating Procedures – Master the phonetic alphabet, Q-signals, and courteous operating practices.
  • Basic Electronics – Understand Ohm’s Law, circuits, and power calculations.
  • Station Fundamentals – Get familiar with transmitters, receivers, antennas, and power supplies.
  • Safety – Learn about RF exposure, grounding, and electrical hazards.

Step 2: Practice with Real Exam Questions

Test yourself with the official Basic Exam questions at the end of each Section and practice with all of the exam questions:


Step 3: Find an Accredited Examiner

  • Locate an Accredited Examiner through the ISED database or local amateur radio clubs.
  • Exams are supervised and feature 100 multiple-choice questions.
  • Passing Score: 70% (Basic Qualification).
  • Honours Distinction: Achieve 80%+ to gain access to additional HF frequencies!

Step 4: Write the Exam and Get Your Callsign

  1. Take the exam with an Accredited Examiner.
  2. Once you pass, your results are submitted to ISED.
  3. Receive your Amateur Radio Operator Certificate and select your unique callsign.

Step 5: Get on the Air and Explore Amateur Radio

  • Purchase your first radio—start simple with a VHF/UHF handheld transceiver.
  • Join a local ham radio club to connect with mentors and participate in nets or events.
  • Try portable activities like Parks on the Air (POTA) or explore HF bands if you earned Honours.

Step 6: Study for your Advanced Licence

  • Sign-up for the free Advanced Amateur Radio course on hamshack.ca once you obtain your basic licence.
  • You'll need your Amateur radio callsign obtained through the Basic Amateur radio course to access the Advanced Course.
