Intermittent interference is best approached with a systematic process. Powering down devices one at a time allows you to identify the source before applying suppression techniques. This avoids unnecessary changes and keeps troubleshooting efficient.

Portable AM radios are sensitive to broadband noise and act as simple near-field detectors. As you move closer to an interference source, the noise becomes stronger. This makes them ideal for quickly narrowing down problem devices.

Conducted RFI often travels along power or data cables. If disconnecting a cable causes the noise to disappear, it strongly suggests the interference is being conducted rather than received through the antenna.

Poorly filtered switching power supplies can generate wideband noise. High-frequency switching edges are a common cause, especially in low-cost or aging designs. Linear supplies are typically much quieter.

Ferrites are most effective when they prevent RF from propagating along cables. Placing them near the source stops the interference before it can spread or be re-radiated by wiring in the shack.

Multiple turns significantly increase choking impedance at RF frequencies. This improves suppression of common-mode currents without affecting normal DC or signal operation.

A spectrum display shows frequency content, harmonics, and bandwidth of interference. This helps identify switching supplies, digital clocks, or external sources based on their spectral signature.

Digital devices frequently produce evenly spaced carriers or comb-like patterns on a spectrum display. These patterns are tied to clock frequencies and their harmonics.

Proper bonding reduces voltage differences between equipment enclosures. This minimizes unwanted RF currents flowing along cables and helps prevent re-radiation inside the shack.

Direction-dependent noise typically indicates an external radiated source. Rotating the antenna alters coupling to the interference, helping with direction-finding and source identification.

If noise disappears when the antenna is disconnected, the interference is likely external. If it remains, the source is probably inside the shack or entering through cabling.

Common-mode currents allow RF to travel on the outside of cables and wiring. These currents often re-radiate noise and are a primary target for ferrite suppression.

Long cables can act as efficient unintended antennas. They both pick up and radiate RF, spreading interference throughout the shack if not properly suppressed.

Turning off breakers can quickly determine whether noise originates inside your home or from outside sources. This step helps separate household devices from neighborhood interference.

Making one change at a time allows you to clearly see what works. This prevents confusion and helps build a repeatable, well-understood RFI mitigation strategy.
