Dartmouth Amateur Radio Club
The Dartmouth Amateur Radio Club (DARC), located at 21 Mt Hope Avenue in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, has been a key hub for amateur radio enthusiasts since the 1920s. Operating under the call sign VE1YO, the club provides a well-equipped hamshack with HF, VHF, UHF, and Packet radio systems, allowing members to communicate using SSB, CW, SSTV, PSK31, and digital modes. It also maintains repeater and autopatch services on 147.15 MHz, 444.6 MHz, and 144.91 MHz. The club actively supports the Halifax Regional Municipality Emergency Management Organization (EMO), ensuring reliable communication during emergencies.
DARC has a rich history, having been re-established in 1947 after a wartime hiatus. Over the years, it has contributed to global and local initiatives, including assisting the United Nations with signal reports and supporting Dartmouth’s bicentennial celebrations. The club organizes annual Field Day events, simulating emergency communications, and provides training for amateur radio licensing. A strong sense of community is fostered through weekly Saturday morning meetups, where members and visitors can gather for discussions and shared learning.
For those interested in amateur radio, DARC offers a welcoming environment with valuable resources and expertise. The club remains dedicated to education and community service, with regular workshops, meetings, and outreach programs. Visitors can access the club by calling on 2M frequencies VE1YO +147.15, VE1PSR 147.27, or by phone at 490-1450.
